<p>Hi, I'm Sarah Slattery, and I'm running to be your next Nebraska Secretary of State.</p><p>I believe deeply in our state and in the power of its people. I’m not a career politician—I’m a chef, an 18-year small business owner, a mom, and a lifelong Nebraskan who believes <strong>our government should focus on real performance and common-sense efficiency instead of partisan drama.</strong></p><h2>Rooted in Nebraska</h2><p>I was born and raised in Plattsmouth, the middle kid of two incredible parents, Mike and Barb. My childhood was shaped by youth sports, camping trips, classic Nintendo, and a solid Catholic education—18 years of it, to be exact, spanning St. John the Baptist in Plattsmouth, Gross Catholic High School in Omaha, and finally Creighton University, where I graduated with a BA in Graphic Design in 2004.</p><p>In 2009, I welcomed my daughter, Helen, into the world. Being her mother has been my fiercest challenge and my greatest gift. Today, we live just four blocks away from the very house I grew up in. When I'm not on the campaign trail, you can find us doing crafts together, playing board games, doing puzzles, or traveling to our family’s cabin up in the beautiful Nebraska Sandhills. (I’m also a frequent blood donor and the reigning 2025 Cass County Fair Salsa Champion!)</p><h2><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary);">An 18-Year Small Business Career</span></h2><p>My work ethic started early. I entered the workforce at 14 at our local one-screen movie theater, and over the years, I've done everything from copy editing for the <em>Plattsmouth Journal</em> to doing facilities management at OPPD power plants during my college summers.</p><p>In 2007, a new passion took hold: I wanted to cook. I went back to school for Culinary Arts at Metropolitan Community College (MCC), graduating as class Salutatorian in 2011, and later sharpening my leadership skills at the MCC Applied Leadership Academy in 2024.</p><p>Over the last 18 years, I have worked alongside my parents to build our family business, <strong>Slattery Vintage Estates</strong>, into a thriving agri-tourism destination in rural Cass County. I know firsthand what it takes to make a payroll, manage compliance, and navigate state regulations.</p><p>I’ve also proudly served as a school lunch lady on and off since 2015. Feeding our kids healthy meals has been an honor, and the school nutrition professionals I've worked with are some of the finest people I know.</p><p><strong>A Legacy of Service:</strong> In 2007, I joined the AmeriCorps National Service program, spending a year building homes in Omaha for Habitat for Humanity. It was one of the most difficult and rewarding experiences of my life, and it cemented my commitment to always showing up for my community.</p><h2>Standing Up for Our Communities</h2><p>When I see a system that's broken or an injustice in our community, I don't sit on the sidelines.</p><ul><li><p><strong>2022 Legislative Run:</strong> I ran for the Nebraska Legislature in LD2. While I didn't win, our grassroots campaign shattered expectations, and I made a promise to keep showing up for our community.</p></li><li><p><strong>Defending Our Libraries:</strong> In 2023, I successfully filed and led the petition paperwork to recall a local school board member who attempted to ban 52 books from our school libraries.</p></li><li><p><strong>Local Leadership:</strong> In November 2025, I was appointed to serve our community on both the Plattsmouth Library Board and the Plattsmouth Bridge Commission.</p></li></ul><h2><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary);">Why I'm Running for Secretary of State</span></h2><p>The Secretary of State's office handles the vital machinery of our state—from protecting our vote to helping small businesses grow and expanding international trade for our farmers.</p><p>Right now, public trust in this office is at an all-time low. Between throwing out valid ballot signatures and releasing our private voter data to the federal government, the current office holder has forgotten who they answer to. My opponent wants to double down on this by implementing a hyper-partisan playbook that treats Nebraska like a national political battlefield.</p><p><strong>I want to protect our elections, and protect your vote.</strong></p><p>We don't need Washington-style drama in Lincoln. We need a leader with real-world business experience who will cut the bureaucratic noise, secure our voting rights, and treat the citizens of Nebraska with the respect they deserve.</p><p></p>

For 18 years, I’ve been a professional chef and small business owner, helping build our family’s agri-tourism destination in rural Cass County. Between ever-changing precinct locations and our newly instituted Voter ID law, there are massive information gaps that leave everyday voters looking for answers.</p><p>My opponent wants to use these shifts to implement a partisan playbook that alienates voters and takes away your voting rights. I want to protect our elections, protect your vote, and focus on common-sense efficiency that makes our government work for you.</p><p>One of the most practical ways we can close these gaps, boost voter turnout, and keep our elections secure is by implementing <strong>same-day voter registration.</strong></p><h4><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary);">Why Same-Day Registration Makes Sense for Nebraska</span></h4><p>Twenty-three states, including our neighbors in Iowa and Wyoming, already allow same-day registration, and they've seen incredible results. Now that Nebraska has a secure Voter ID law on the books, adding same-day registration is safer, easier, and more secure than ever before.</p><ul><li><p><strong>Secures the Process:</strong> By utilizing the current Voter ID framework, election workers can verify a voter's identity and register them securely right at the polling place.</p></li><li><p><strong>Cuts Bureaucratic Red Tape:</strong> It eliminates arbitrary registration deadlines that accidentally lock eligible, busy citizens out of the democratic process.</p></li><li><p><strong>Fixes Honest Mistakes:</strong> If a voter moves across town and forgets to update their paperwork, they shouldn't lose their voice.
